Designed by Ogrydziak/Prillinger Architects, Gallery House is located in San Francisco, California, in a neighborhood overlooking South Park, a rare expanse of greenery in the dense urban landscape. The clients, being avid collectors of contemporary art by female artists, wanted to incorporate their collection within their domestic space in the form of a semi-public gallery in which to exhibit their artworks and those of their friends.
With this in mind, the four-bedroom, three-level townhouse is designed around the idea of the opaque glass fronted ground level becoming the definitive gallery space. In addition, the curated collection then continues through the upper two floors to culminate in the rooftop terrace and sculpture garden.
Sliding glass walls on the front and rear of the house ensure natural ventilation of the space and take advantage of the temperate climate of the city. Rooftop skylights and a light shaft stairwell flood the home with natural daylight and a rear courtyard completes the design for this unconventional urban property with its dual identity.
